Does gear matter in photography?

Yes.

No.

Yes.

Definitely Yes.

Do you need to have expensive gear to be a good photographer?

Definitely No.

I use used mirrorless cameras, 35mm cameras, and now 120mm film cameras for my work. Photography taught me that you do not need expensive gear to create great images or images that you will love and treasure. We get so caught up in modern day capitalism that we feel that we need to buy the latest and greatest. I've gone broke buying into this never ending cycle. Now, I feel that I've broken free from this habit and am totally happy with the gear that I've been using for the past few years.

Some of my favorite portraits were taken with a $100 35mm film camera and a $6 roll of film, plus $4 to develop that roll. Compared to a $1500 digital camera, this is a pretty large gap.

I've taken better images with my $300 Lumix LX10 than with a Fujifilm XPro2. Not that I don't love and use the Fujifilm XPro 2, but just the point that you don't need an expensive camera to get started in photography or even if you have been here for awhile, to take great images. - Molly
